The word 'Dichroic' comes from 'Di' meaning two and 'Chroic' meaning colour.

Dichroic Glass was developed in the 1960's by the Aerospace industry for use in face shields of space suits. It consists of a multi-layered film coating of different metals (Titanium, Silver, Gold etc.) over the glass which creates wonderful rainbow and iridescent effects, especially under lighting.

The process was discovered around 100 years ago by a German scientist and we now have numerous colours, textures and patterns available to us.

When light is returned from the front surface of the Dichroic Glass we get 'reflected colour' and when light is able to go through the glass and be seen the other side we get 'transmitted colour'.

Dichroic Glass can be fused with other compatible glass and due to the various firing processes the end result can never be exactly reproduced, making each piece unique.
